Think Tank

The HUJPN Think Tank has always aspired to bridge the gap between expansive research resources regarding Japan overseas and those in need in Japan while creating precious learning opportunities for undergraduates to directly communicate with government entities in Japan and the US to create evidence-based recommendations on important policy topics.

Project with the Digital Agency, Government of Japan
(Fall 2023)

In 2023 Fall, the HUJPN Think Tank Unit will be collaborating with the Digital Agency, Government of Japan. The Digital Agency is a new agency of the Japanese government, launched in 2021. HUJPN will conduct a literature review and various analyses on digital policy in foreign governments to make practical recommendations. In addition to the traditional literature review, the unit is planning to conduct expert interviews and field studies. Please check this page periodically for updates!

Project with the City of Tsukuba (Fall 2022)

In Fall 2022, six undergraduates from Harvard College and Boston University worked closely with the City of Tsukuba in Ibaraki, Japan (sister city of Cambridge, MA). We conducted a comprehensive case study analysis on worker cooperatives and local digital currency as two potentially effective means to lead community revitalization. In December 2022, three members visited the city for a tour of declining peripheral areas led by city officials and a discussion with Mayor Igarashi and officials about our findings. In January, we submitted a final report to the city, detailing what factors would lead to successful use of the means and how Tsukuba should utilize them in the specific contexts.  Although the project was conducted fully in English, the final report was written in Japanese.
