Project with the City of Tsukuba (Fall 2022)

In Fall 2022, six undergraduates from Harvard College and Boston University worked closely with the City of Tsukuba in Ibaraki, Japan (sister city of Cambridge, MA). We conducted a comprehensive case study analysis on worker cooperatives and local digital currency as two potentially effective means to lead community revitalization. In December 2022, three members visited the city for a tour of declining peripheral areas led by city officials and a discussion with Mayor Igrashi and officials about our findings about the two methods. In January, we submitted a final report to the city, detailing what factors would lead to successful use of the means and how Tsukuba should utilize them in the specific contexts.  Although the project was conducted fully in English, the final report was written in Japanese. HUJPN will continue to work with entities like local municipalities to seek grassroots solutions to pressing problems, such as aging population.
